Arkansas head coach John Calipari is leaning hard into the strategy that made him a household name, even as the college basketball landscape shifts toward veteran transfers. With prized recruit Meleek Thomas officially keeping his name in the NBA Draft, Calipari is building the Razorbacks' roster around a core of one-and-done talent rather than chasing older, international players.
Thomas, a five-star guard, was expected to be the centerpiece of Arkansas's 2025 recruiting class. His decision to stay in the draft leaves a hole in the backcourt, but Calipari is not panicking. Instead, he is doubling down on the freshman-heavy model he perfected at Kentucky. The Razorbacks already have commitments from several top-50 prospects, and Calipari is actively recruiting more high school stars to fill out the rotation.
This approach stands in contrast to many of his SEC peers, who have loaded up on experienced transfers from overseas and mid-major programs. Calipari believes that elite high school talent, when given minutes and freedom, can still win in the modern game. He has pointed to his past success with young rosters as proof that the blueprint works.
Arkansas fans will have to be patient as the freshmen develop through non-conference play. But Calipari is betting that by March, his young guns will be playing their best basketball. With Thomas gone, the spotlight now falls on the next wave of five-star recruits to carry the load.
