Big Ten adopts rule barring players with pro contracts from returning to play

Big Ten adopts rule barring players with pro contracts from returning to play

A recent court decision has opened the door for some athletes to return to college competition for a fifth year, but the Big Ten Conference is already closing that door for players who signed professional contracts. The league announced a new policy that prohibits anyone with pro experience from coming back to play in the conference, even if a judge says they are eligible.

The move comes after a ruling that granted extra eligibility to certain athletes who lost a season due to the pandemic. That decision created a strange situation where a few players who had already turned pro, and even played in games, could technically re-enroll and suit up for their old college teams. The Big Ten decided that is not going to happen.

Under the new rule, once an athlete signs a professional contract, they are done with Big Ten competition for good. The conference says the policy is about keeping the college game separate from the pro level and protecting the integrity of the league. It also clears up any confusion for coaches and athletic directors who might have been wondering if a former star could suddenly show up at practice.

The ruling that started all this is still being reviewed, and other conferences are watching closely. But the Big Ten is not waiting around. They want a clear line in the sand, and they have drawn it. For any athlete hoping to get one more college game after a taste of the pros, that door is now locked.
