When the Dallas Cowboys wrapped up their training camp in Oxnard and finished the preseason slate, most of the attention went to the usual suspects. Dak Prescott threw some sharp passes. CeeDee Lamb made a few highlight catches. But if you ask around the locker room, the name that kept coming up as the real surprise of the summer was linebacker Jaishawn Barham.
Barham, a rookie linebacker out of Maryland, did not arrive with a ton of fanfare. He was drafted in the fifth round, and the expectation was that he would spend most of his first year learning behind veteran starters. Instead, he forced his way into the conversation with consistent play, sideline-to-sideline speed, and a knack for showing up in the right spot on run downs.
What stood out most during camp was his instincts. He seemed to diagnose plays a beat faster than most rookies. In the preseason games, that translated into tackles near the line of scrimmage and a few pass breakups in coverage. Coaches praised his willingness to take on blocks and his ability to shed them quickly. He did not look like a player who needed time to adjust to the speed of the NFL.
The question now is how the coaching staff will use him. The Cowboys have a solid duo at linebacker, but Barham has shown enough to earn a role in certain packages, especially on early downs and short-yardage situations. Special teams will likely be his first home, but if he keeps playing like he did in August, he could push for more defensive snaps as the season goes on.
For a team that has struggled with depth at linebacker in recent years, Barham's emergence is a quiet but meaningful win. He may not be the flashiest name on the roster, but he has proven that he belongs. And in a camp full of storylines, his steady rise might be the one that pays off the most by December.
