In a historic shift for America’s premier stock car racing organization, Jim France has announced he will step down from his role as NASCAR CEO, clearing the path for the first leader outside the France family to take the helm. The move marks a significant transition for the sport, which has been under the stewardship of the France family since its founding in 1948.

Taking over day-to-day operations will be Steve O’Donnell, a longtime NASCAR executive who has served in various leadership capacities over the past two decades. O’Donnell, currently the chief operating officer, is set to assume the role of president and will oversee the strategic direction of the series, including race operations, broadcast partnerships, and fan engagement initiatives.

Jim France, the 79-year-old son of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., has led the organization since 2018, following the suspension of his nephew Brian France. During his tenure, Jim France guided the sport through the COVID-19 pandemic, oversaw the introduction of the Next Gen car, and navigated complex media rights negotiations. His decision to step aside is seen as a deliberate move to modernize leadership and ensure long-term stability.
