As the Detroit Lions wrapped up their final day of training camp on Thursday, head coach Dan Campbell expressed strong satisfaction with the depth and adaptability of his defensive backfield. Campbell told reporters that the group's ability to shift between roles has been a major highlight of the last few weeks.
"We have some real candidates in that room," Campbell said. "The way they have adjusted to different spots has been impressive."
The competition has been fueled by injuries to safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, both of whom are still on the physically unable to perform list. Their absence has opened the door for younger players and veterans alike to show what they can do. Campbell noted that while the injuries are unfortunate, they have given the coaching staff a chance to evaluate players in multiple situations.
Several defensive backs have been rotating between safety and cornerback positions during drills. That flexibility, Campbell explained, will be key once the regular season begins. He added that the team is not rushing anyone back and will make decisions based on who gives the unit the best chance to succeed.
The Lions are set to finalize their roster in the coming weeks, and the secondary remains one of the most competitive areas on the team. Campbell said he is confident that the group will be ready, regardless of who is healthy by the season opener.
