The Detroit Lions have parted ways with defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike, a move that closes the book on a tenure defined more by injury than production. The team also released rookie Tyre West from the practice squad, freeing up roster space as the regular season opener approaches.
Onwuzurike arrived as a second round pick out of Washington, and expectations were high for his quickness and disruption along the interior. Those expectations never had a real chance to take hold. Back and leg injuries limited him across multiple seasons, and the flashes he showed were too brief to secure a lasting role in a defensive front that has been rebuilt around depth and durability.
The decision reflects a front office that has grown comfortable making hard calls. Detroit has invested heavily in its defensive line through the draft and free agency, and carrying a player who could not stay on the field no longer made sense with the season days away.
West, an undrafted rookie, was viewed as a developmental project with raw power. His release from the practice squad suggests the coaching staff preferred other options for the final developmental spots.
The moves leave the Lions with added flexibility. That space could go toward a waiver claim, a veteran addition, or simply keeping an extra body at a position where the team feels thinner than it would like. For Onwuzurike, the next step is finding a new team willing to bet on a fresh start and better health.
