NCAA baseball: OU fails to keep up with Georgia Tech's hitting

The Oklahoma Sooners could not keep pace with the high-powered offense of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, dropping a 9-3 decision in the Atlanta Regional of the NCAA baseball tournament. The game, played at Russ Chandler Stadium, saw the top-seeded Yellow Jackets improve to 50-9 while the Sooners fell to 33-22.

Georgia Tech struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, but Oklahoma answered back in the top of the third. The Sooners tied the game at 2-2, briefly quieting the home crowd. However, the Yellow Jackets responded immediately in the bottom half of the frame, pushing across three runs to regain control. Georgia Tech never looked back from there, adding two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to build a commanding 8-2 lead.

Oklahoma managed to scratch across a single run in the sixth, but the Yellow Jackets matched it in the seventh to seal the final margin. The Sooners' pitching staff struggled to contain a Georgia Tech lineup that has been one of the most dangerous in the country all season. The Yellow Jackets pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of a few Oklahoma defensive miscues.

For the Sooners, the loss sends them into the elimination bracket of the double-elimination regional. They will need to win their next game to keep their season alive and force another matchup with Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, move on to the regional final, needing just one more win to advance to the Super Regionals.
