A new report reveals that people who place bets on sports through their phones or computers are significantly more likely to face financial trouble than those who stick to physical casinos or betting windows. According to the data, online sports bettors are 15 times more likely to miss bill payments compared to gamblers who only wager in person. The findings highlight a growing gap in how different types of gambling affect household budgets.
Researchers analyzed spending patterns and self-reported financial stress among gamblers. They found that the convenience and speed of digital betting lead to faster losses and less time for reflection. In-person gamblers, by contrast, often have to travel to a venue and handle cash, which creates natural pauses that limit impulsive decisions. The report also noted that online platforms use features like instant deposits and push notifications to keep users engaged, which can escalate spending quickly.
The study adds to concerns about the rapid expansion of legal sports betting across the country. While in-person gambling still carries risks, the data suggests that the digital version amplifies harm for a subset of users. Advocates are calling for stronger consumer protections, such as deposit limits and mandatory cool-off periods, to help prevent financial distress among online bettors.
