Premier League sporting directors are supposed to bring continuity. Why so much turnover?

The sporting director position was meant to be the anchor of modern football operations. A buffer between the boardroom and the dressing room. A long-term planner who would outlast managers and keep a club's identity intact through turbulent seasons. Yet the current reality across the Premier League is telling a different story.

In the last eighteen months, more than half of the top flight has changed its sporting director or technical director. Some left by mutual consent. Others were pushed out after transfer windows that failed to deliver. A few simply walked away, citing the relentless pressure and unclear boundaries between their job and the head coach's authority.

The irony is not lost on those inside the game. The very role created to provide continuity has become one of the most unstable positions in football. At Manchester United, the arrival of a new director was supposed to signal a fresh start. Instead, the club has already seen internal restructuring and questions about who actually makes the final call on signings. Arsenal brought in a new figure to oversee recruitment, but the noise around his influence has not faded. Liverpool, too, have reshuffled their hierarchy after years of a stable setup under previous leadership.

Part of the problem is that the job description is vague. Some clubs expect the sporting director to lead recruitment, negotiate contracts, and manage the academy. Others want a more hands-off advisor. When a manager fails, the director is often blamed. When a manager succeeds, the director is often ignored. It is a no-win situation that leads to short tenures and constant churn.

There is also the issue of ego. Owners want quick results. Fans want marquee signings. Players want clarity. The sporting director sits in the middle, trying to balance all three while knowing that one bad window could cost them their position. The average tenure for a Premier League sporting director is now under two years. That is hardly the foundation for building a long-term project.

Until clubs define the role more clearly and give it real authority, the turnover will likely continue. The idea of continuity is nice in theory. But in practice, the sporting director has become just another seat in a revolving door.
