The 2026-27 campaign is almost here, and the Chicago Blackhawks enter it with a mix of hope and hard questions. After another year of growing pains, the front office made a few quiet moves rather than big splashes. The core remains young, but the pressure is starting to build for tangible progress.

The biggest story is in goal. The crease situation is finally settled, with a clear starter who can steal games. That alone should keep Chicago in more contests than last season. On the blue line, the top pairing looks solid, but the bottom pair is still a work in progress. Injuries there could hurt quickly.

Up front, the top line has real chemistry. The second line, though, needs a bounce-back year from a veteran who struggled with consistency. If he finds his game, the scoring depth improves overnight. The power play also has to get better. It ranked near the bottom last season, and that cannot happen again if they want to stay competitive.

The coaching staff is preaching a faster transition game. That means less time in the defensive zone and more controlled breakouts. It sounds good on paper, but execution will be tested early. The schedule opens with a tough road trip, so we will know quickly if the system is taking hold.

Realistically, this is not a playoff team yet. But it should be a team that is harder to play against. The goal is to be in the hunt by December, not out of it by Halloween. If the young forwards take another step and the goaltending holds up, Chicago could surprise some people. If not, it will be another long spring. Either way, the direction is clearer than it was a year ago.
