The Los Angeles Rams announced the death of franchise great LeRoy Irvin on Tuesday. He was 66 years old. No cause of death was given.
Irvin played 11 seasons in the NFL, nine of them with the Rams. He is one of the few players in league history to earn All-Pro honors at two different positions. In 1981, he was named first-team All-Pro as a punt returner. Four years later, in 1985, he earned the same recognition as a cornerback.
Drafted by the Rams in the third round out of Kansas in 1980, Irvin quickly made an impact. He led the NFL in punt return average in 1981 with 16.0 yards per return, including two touchdowns. As a cornerback, he was known for his aggressive style and ball skills. He recorded 33 career interceptions, returning two for touchdowns.
Irvin was a key part of the Rams teams that reached the playoffs in the early and mid-1980s. He also played for the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots before retiring after the 1991 season.
The Rams released a statement calling Irvin "a fierce competitor and a beloved teammate." They said his versatility and toughness made him a fan favorite. Irvin is survived by his wife and two children. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
