The Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres completed a small-scale trade on Tuesday, a move that barely registered on the transaction wire but carries a bit of history for one of the players involved. Carolina picked up forward prospect Maxim Strbak from Buffalo in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The pick becomes a sixth-rounder if Strbak plays a certain number of games in the NHL within the next two seasons, though that threshold is not considered likely to be met.
Strbak, a 21-year-old defenseman turned winger, was originally drafted by the Sabres in the second round back in 2021. He has spent the last two seasons developing in the Slovakian pro league, where his offensive numbers have been modest but steady. What makes this deal interesting is not the player's current ceiling, but the path he took to get here. Buffalo had essentially given up on him after he failed to earn a contract with their AHL affiliate, and he was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Instead of letting him walk for nothing, the Sabres found a taker in Carolina, a team known for taking low-cost fliers on players with untapped potential.
For the Hurricanes, this is a no-risk depth move. Strbak will likely report to their AHL club in Chicago and get a chance to prove he can adapt to the North American game. He has good size at six-foot-two and a heavy shot from the point, but his skating has always been a question mark. Carolina's development staff has a solid track record of ironing out those kinds of flaws, so there is some logic here beyond just filling out a roster.
Buffalo, meanwhile, clears a contract slot and picks up a late-round asset for a player they had no plans for. It is the kind of minor transaction that happens dozens of times a year, but the backstory of a former second-round pick switching positions and leagues before landing in a new organization gives it a little more texture than your average waiver wire fodder. Neither side expects this to move the needle, but sometimes these quiet deals end up being the ones that surprise you a couple of years down the road.
