Sports betting industry spending on US midterm elections surpasses $72 million

The sports betting industry has poured more than $72 million into the 2022 US midterm elections, making it the third-largest corporate donor behind cryptocurrency and technology sectors. This surge in political spending comes as the industry expands rapidly across the country, with legalized sports gambling now available in over 30 states.

Campaign finance records show that major players like DraftKings, FanDuel, and MGM Resorts have contributed heavily to both parties, though the majority of donations have gone to Republican candidates and committees. The money has been funneled through direct contributions, super PACs, and dark money groups, with much of it targeting state-level races where gambling laws are decided.

Industry advocates argue the spending is necessary to combat illegal offshore betting operations and to ensure proper regulation. Critics, however, warn that the flood of cash is buying influence and normalizing an activity that can lead to addiction and financial ruin. Some consumer groups have called for stricter limits on political donations from gambling companies.

The $72 million figure represents a significant increase from previous election cycles. In the 2018 midterms, the industry spent roughly $30 million. The jump reflects both the rapid growth of legal sports betting since the Supreme Court cleared the way for states to authorize it in 2018 and the high stakes involved in shaping future regulations. With several states still debating legalization, the industry's political investment is expected to keep rising.
