The next week and a half offers a full slate of local sports and recreation options, from youth clinics to college matches and high school league openers. Here is a look at what is scheduled from Friday, September 4, through Sunday, September 13.

Friday, September 4

The high school football season continues with non-league matchups across the region. The varsity games kick off at 7 p.m., with junior varsity contests following on Saturday morning. The cross country teams open their season at the early bird invitational, starting at 4 p.m. at the county fairgrounds.

Saturday, September 5

The city parks department hosts a free youth soccer skills clinic from 9 a.m. to noon at Riverside Fields. The clinic is open to players ages 6 through 12 and focuses on basic dribbling and passing. No registration is required, but participants should bring their own ball and water bottle.

The community college volleyball team plays a tri-match at home starting at 11 a.m. against two conference rivals. The women's tennis team also hosts a non-conference dual at 1 p.m.

Sunday, September 6

A family fun run and walk takes place at the lakefront trail. The 5K run starts at 8 a.m., followed by a 2-mile walk at 8:15. Proceeds benefit the local youth athletic scholarship fund. On-site registration opens at 7 a.m.

Monday, September 7

Labor Day brings the annual adult co-ed softball tournament at the sports complex. Games run from 9 a.m. until the championship final in the late afternoon. The recreation department also opens the pool for a final holiday swim from noon to 5 p.m.

Tuesday, September 8

College soccer kicks off with a women's home match at 4 p.m. The men's team travels for a midweek road game. High school girls golf hosts a nine-hole conference match at the municipal course, with a 3:30 p.m. shotgun start.

Wednesday, September 9

The university field hockey team plays a divisional opponent at home under the lights at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, high school boys water polo opens league play with a home meet starting at 5 p.m. The swim and dive teams hold their first time trials of the season at the aquatic center.

Thursday, September 10

The community college cross country teams compete in a three-team meet at the arboretum. The women's 5K starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by the men's 8K at 5:15. High school girls volleyball has a full slate of conference matches, with the freshman, JV, and varsity teams all playing at home beginning at 4 p.m.

Friday, September 11

High school football resumes with league openers for most area teams. All varsity games start at 7 p.m. The college men's soccer team hosts a non-conference match at 7:30 p.m. at the campus stadium.

Saturday, September 12

The city hosts its annual youth triathlon at the community pool and surrounding park. The event starts at 8 a.m. with age group waves running through the morning. Distances vary by age, and all finishers receive a medal.

The university football team plays its home opener at 1 p.m. against a non-league opponent. The college women's volleyball team also has a doubleheader starting at noon.

Sunday, September 13

The weekend wraps up with a co-ed adult flag football league starting at the sports complex. Games begin at 9 a.m. and run every hour until 2 p.m. A youth basketball skills camp for grades 3 through 8 takes place at the middle school gym from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is available online through the parks department.
