The Washington Commanders have been searching for a true number one receiver for what feels like a decade, and early signs from training camp suggest they may have finally found him in Stefon Diggs. The veteran wideout has been turning heads in Richmond, building instant chemistry with second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Diggs, who arrived via trade this offseason, has been running crisp routes and making contested catches look routine. What stands out most is the timing between him and Daniels. They have connected on several deep balls and back-shoulder throws that require trust and repetition. For a young quarterback, having a safety blanket like Diggs who can separate at the line and win 50-50 balls is huge.
The Commanders offense struggled to stretch the field last season, often settling for short gains. Diggs changes that math. His ability to work the intermediate and deep areas opens up space underneath for Terry McLaurin and the tight ends. Defenses will have to pick their poison.
Coaches have praised Diggs for his professionalism and work ethic. He has been staying after practice to run extra routes with Daniels, a sign that he is invested in the team's success, not just his own stats. Some questioned whether Diggs would be a distraction after his exit from Buffalo, but so far, he has been the opposite.
If this early connection carries into the regular season, Washington's passing attack could be one of the more dangerous units in the NFC East. Diggs looks like the missing piece this offense needed, and he is proving it every day in camp.
