The San Francisco 49ers are being encouraged to add a familiar face to their backfield before the season gets underway. Analyst Nick San Miguel of Niners Noise believes the team should reach out to veteran running back Jeff Wilson and bring him in for training camp. Wilson, who spent several seasons with the franchise, has been somewhat forgotten in recent years, but his history with the team and his production make him a logical option for depth.
Wilson was an undrafted find who turned into a reliable rotational back for San Francisco. Over his time with the 49ers, he totaled 23 touchdowns and proved to be a physical runner with a nose for the end zone. He also knows the system well, which could ease his transition back into the roster. The team currently has a crowded running back room, but injuries are always a concern, and Wilson offers a proven fallback option.
With the 49ers aiming for another deep playoff run, adding a player like Wilson could provide insurance without much risk. He would not need a major role, but his familiarity with the offense and his ability to contribute on short-yardage situations make him a sensible addition. As training camp approaches, it remains to be seen if the front office will make the call, but the argument for bringing him back is gaining some traction.
