The Chicago Cubs have found a new home for veteran right-hander Jameson Taillon, sending him to the Toronto Blue Jays in a trade finalized Friday afternoon. The move comes just days after the Cubs designated Taillon for assignment, a surprising turn for a pitcher who had been a steady presence in the rotation since signing a four-year deal before the 2023 season.
In exchange, the Cubs will receive a minor league infielder and cash considerations. The Blue Jays, who have struggled to find consistent starting pitching depth this season, will slot Taillon into the back of their rotation. The 32-year-old has posted a 4.42 ERA across 18 starts this year, with a strikeout rate that has dipped slightly from his career norms. His ground ball percentage remains solid, which should play well in Toronto's spacious home ballpark.
Taillon's time in Chicago was marked by inconsistency. He showed flashes of the form that made him a top prospect with the Pirates, but injuries and a tendency to give up hard contact limited his ceiling. The Cubs, who are in the thick of a wild card race, decided to move on rather than keep him in a swing role or send him to the bullpen. The trade also clears roughly $18 million in guaranteed salary for the next two seasons, giving the front office more flexibility as the deadline approaches.
For Toronto, this is a low-risk move for a pitcher who has thrown at least 140 innings in each of the last two full seasons. The Blue Jays hope a change of scenery and a more pitcher-friendly environment can help Taillon rediscover the command that made him a reliable mid-rotation arm. He is expected to make his debut for the Blue Jays early next week against the Orioles.
