Giants Should Pass on Taylor and Focus on Affordable Depth

Giants Should Pass on Taylor and Focus on Affordable Depth

The case for trading for Jonathan Taylor is easy to understand on the surface. He is a talented young running back, and the Giants have questions in the backfield. But the cost of acquiring him does not match where this team stands right now.

Reports indicate the Giants do not have the premium draft capital needed to win a bidding war for Taylor. That matters. Giving up early picks for a running back, even a good one, is a risky move for a roster with several other needs. The position has also become one where production can be found later in the draft and in free agency at a fraction of the price.

Taylor is due a significant contract extension as well. Paying both the trade price and a long term deal would tie up resources the Giants could use to strengthen the offensive line, the secondary, and the pass rush. Those areas affect every snap, while a running back touches the ball far less.

The smarter approach is to hunt for cheap depth. Veterans on short deals and mid round picks can share carries, protect the quarterback, and keep the offense balanced without mortgaging the future. Depth also gives the coaching staff flexibility to adjust week to week based on matchups and health.

None of this means Taylor is not a good player. It means the Giants are not in the right spot to make that kind of bet. Building through affordable depth keeps the cap flexible and the draft cupboard stocked. That is the patient path, and for this team it is the right one.
