Florida State has fired head football coach Mike Norvell, ending a tenure that once reached the sport's biggest stage but collapsed into a stretch of losses the program could no longer tolerate. The decision leaves the university on the hook for roughly $50 million remaining on his contract, the third-highest buyout in college football history.

Norvell arrived in Tallahassee in 2020 and weathered a difficult start before guiding the Seminoles to an undefeated regular season and an ACC championship in 2023. That team was controversially left out of the College Football Playoff, and the program has not recovered its footing since. The following season brought a sharp decline, and the losses continued into the current campaign, erasing the goodwill built during the rise.
