As the 2026 NBA playoffs approach, LeBron James is already studying his next opponent. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar offered a detailed preview of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team standing between him and another championship run.
Speaking after practice, James acknowledged the Thunder's growth this season. "They are not the same team we saw a couple years ago," he said. "They have depth, they have youth, and they have experience now. That is a dangerous combination."
James pointed specifically to Oklahoma City's defensive schemes. "They switch everything. They have length at every position. Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander) is playing at an MVP level, but it is their supporting cast that makes them tough. Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, those guys have taken big steps."
The 40-year-old forward also noted the Thunder's ability to adapt mid-game. "Coach Daigneault does a great job adjusting. You cannot just run the same sets against them. They will take away your first option and make you beat them with your second or third."
When asked about his own team's preparation, James kept it simple. "We have to be sharp. No turnovers, no second-chance points. They punish mistakes. It is going to be a chess match."
The Lakers and Thunder are expected to meet in the Western Conference semifinals, assuming both advance past the first round. James has faced Oklahoma City in the playoffs before, but never with this version of their roster.
"I respect what they built," James said. "But we are built for this too. It is going to be fun."
