LIV Golf isn't the only sports property being reconsidered in Saudi reboot of investment strategy

LIV Golf isn't the only sports property being reconsidered in Saudi reboot of investment strategy

The billionaires behind Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund are pulling the plug on LIV Golf. The breakaway league, which spent hundreds of millions luring top talent away from the PGA Tour, is no longer a priority. It won't be the first mega sports project they have given up on recently.

Sources close to the kingdom's Public Investment Fund say the decision is part of a wider recalibration. After years of spending freely on everything from soccer clubs to boxing events, Saudi leaders are now asking harder questions about return on investment. The flashy, controversial LIV experiment was a loss leader from the start, bleeding cash while failing to attract a mainstream TV audience or generate meaningful sponsorship revenue.

This is not an isolated move. The kingdom has already pulled back from other high-profile ventures. Plans for a massive new stadium complex were quietly shelved last year. A proposed deal to buy a major European football club fell through after internal pushback. The message is clear: the era of blank checks for sports vanity projects is ending.

Instead, the fund is refocusing on domestic infrastructure, tourism, and technology. The goal is to build assets that generate steady income, not just headlines. For LIV Golf, that means a future without the unlimited backing it once enjoyed. Players who signed massive contracts may still get paid, but the league's long-term survival now looks doubtful. The Saudi reboot is real, and it is leaving casualties behind.
