The NHL has officially closed its investigation into Mike Babcock, bringing an end to the controversy that surrounded the veteran coach before he could take the helm of the Edmonton Oilers. The league announced that it found no evidence to support the allegations that led to the probe, and no disciplinary action will be taken against Babcock.
The investigation was launched after reports surfaced claiming Babcock had asked players to show him photos from their personal phones, a practice that drew comparisons to his controversial tenure in Toronto. The Oilers had hired Babcock over the summer, but he stepped aside voluntarily while the league looked into the matter.
In its statement, the NHL said it interviewed multiple players and staff members from the Oilers organization. The league concluded that while Babcock did request to see photos, it was not done in a coercive or inappropriate manner. The investigation found no violation of NHL policies.
Babcock, 60, has not yet commented publicly on the decision. The Oilers, meanwhile, have moved forward with Kris Knoblauch as their head coach. It remains unclear whether Babcock will seek another coaching opportunity in the league or if this effectively ends his NHL career. The former Stanley Cup winner with Detroit has now been linked to two separate controversies involving player conduct, and his reputation has taken a significant hit in recent years.
