MADISON, Wis. (AP) — State lawmakers have passed a significant measure granting Wisconsin's federally recognized tribal nations the authority to offer online sports betting. This legislative action marks a pivotal step in potentially reshaping the state's gaming landscape.
The approved plan allows each of the eleven tribes to negotiate amended gaming compacts with the governor to launch digital platforms for accepting wagers on professional and collegiate sports. Currently, sports betting is only permitted physically at tribal casinos. This expansion to online platforms would provide a modernized avenue for the practice.
Proponents argue the change is a matter of fairness and economic opportunity, enabling tribal nations to compete in a rapidly evolving digital market and generate crucial revenue for their communities. The move is seen as an acknowledgment of tribal sovereignty in gaming matters.
The legislation now proceeds to Governor Tony Evers for final consideration. If signed, Wisconsin would join a growing number of states that have moved to legalize and regulate online sports wagering in recent years.
