The Houston Astros have officially named catcher and broadcaster Alan Ashby, alongside former infielder and manager Phil "Scrap Iron" Garner, as the newest members of the Astros Hall of Fame. The duo will be formally inducted as the Class of 2026 in a ceremony next season.
Alan Ashby, a defensive stalwart, spent nine of his seventeen major league seasons behind the plate for Houston from 1979 to 1989. He was a key part of the franchise's first National League West title in 1980 and the memorable 1986 playoff run. Following his playing career, Ashby served as a beloved voice of the Astros for over two decades in the broadcast booth.
Phil Garner's impact spans multiple eras. As a player, the tenacious infielder was a two-time All-Star with the Astros (1981-1987) and a leader on the 1986 NLCS team. He later returned to helm the club as manager from 2004 to 2007, famously guiding them to their first-ever World Series appearance in 2005.
The Astros Hall of Fame committee selected the inductees, honoring individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the organization's history. The induction celebration will highlight the enduring legacy both men have forged with the franchise and its fans.
