Braves drop Brewers series finale

Braves drop Brewers series finale

The Milwaukee Brewers avoided a sweep on Sunday, taking the series finale against the Atlanta Braves with a 5-3 win at Truist Park. While the Brewers salvaged the last game, the Braves still walked away with the series victory, having won the first two matchups.

Milwaukee jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning off Braves starter Max Fried. The lefty struggled with command early, walking two batters before giving up a two-run double to William Contreras. The Brewers added another run on a sacrifice fly, putting Atlanta in an early hole.

The Braves chipped away, getting a run back in the second on a Marcell Ozuna double and another in the fifth on an Austin Riley solo home run. But the Brewers answered in the sixth when Joey Wiemer launched a two-run shot to left field, extending the lead to 5-2.

Atlanta made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with one out against Brewers closer Devin Williams. Ozuna drove in a run with a groundout, but Williams struck out Travis d'Arnaud to end the game and earn his 12th save.

The loss drops the Braves to 72-48 on the season, still comfortably atop the NL East. The Brewers, now 64-57, remain in the thick of the NL Central race. For Atlanta, the series win was the bigger prize, but the missed sweep leaves a bit of a sour taste as they head into a tough stretch of games.
