PARIS (AP) - France has placed emergency services and military units on standby for wildfires, while also limiting public drinking and scrapping certain outdoor sports events as a severe heat wave spreads across parts of Europe. The measures come as temperatures climb well above seasonal norms, raising concerns about public health and fire risks in several regions.
Local authorities in affected areas have banned the sale and consumption of alcohol in public spaces, a move aimed at reducing heat-related incidents and risky behavior. Outdoor sporting events, including some amateur competitions and training sessions, have been canceled or postponed to protect participants from heatstroke and dehydration. The government has also activated a special crisis coordination center to monitor the situation.
The heat wave, which has already pushed thermometers past 40 degrees Celsius in parts of Spain and Italy, is now moving northward. Meteorologists warn that the extreme temperatures could persist for several more days. In response, French officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors. The military's involvement signals a heightened readiness to deploy firefighting aircraft and ground crews if blazes break out in dry forests and scrubland.
