A bipartisan push to reshape the rules of college athletics is gaining momentum on Capitol Hill, with key senators expressing confidence that a landmark bill is close to passing. The legislation, known as the "Protect College Sports" Act, aims to create a new federal framework for how universities handle athlete compensation, recruiting, and the growing influence of name, image, and likeness deals. The bill has now secured a high-profile endorsement from legendary former Alabama football coach Nick Saban, who has long called for more structure in the sport.
Saban, who retired in 2024 after seven national championships, said the current system is unsustainable. He argued that without clear national standards, college sports risk becoming a chaotic marketplace that hurts both athletes and schools. The bill, co-sponsored by Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington, would establish a uniform set of rules to replace the patchwork of state laws that currently govern NIL payments. It would also create a new oversight body to enforce rules on recruiting and pay-for-play arrangements.
Supporters say the act would protect the amateur model while allowing athletes to benefit from their fame. Critics, however, worry it could limit the freedom players have recently gained. With Saban's backing, the bill's sponsors hope to build enough momentum for a vote later this year.
